ATTENTION Please Note: Since the time this post was written I have found greater clarity on nutrition. I no longer go for protein supplements in my smoothies. I have learned about the protein myth mostly from T. Colin Campbell who conducted various studies using protein. I now know that 80-10-10 (carbohydrates-protein-fat) nutrition works best for the human body with 10% protein easily being obtained from eating whole food plant-based nutrition without the need for supplementing protein. So, these recipe flavors still work, but no need for the supplements!
I am a creature of habit. I like to try new smoothies, but mainly I stick to these tried-and-true smoothie recipes that I know by heart.
Here are three of my favorite go-to smoothie recipes.
Pineapple-Strawberry Protein Smoothie
1 cup of water or coconut milk
1 1/2 cups of ice
1/3 cup frozen pineapple chunks
1/3 cup frozen strawberries
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
1 scoop of Super Reds
Add ingredients liquids first to blender on low gradually increasing to high blending for 1 minute or until desired consistency is reached. Depending on the size of your fruit chunks you may have to add water.
Lemon Smoothie
1 packet Real Lemon or 1/4 cup lemon juice
1 cup water
1 1/2 cups ice
1 Tablespoon of honey (optional)
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
handful of spinach or kale
1/2 cup plain plant-based alternative yogurt
1 scoop of chia seeds
Add ingredients liquids first to blender on low gradually increasing to high blending for 1 minute or until desired consistency is reached. You may have to add water.
Chocolate Banana Smoothie
1 cup water or plant-based non-dairy milk
1 1/2 cups ice
2 handfuls of kale or spinach
1/2 cup plain plant-based alternative yogurt
1 banana
1 scoop chocolate protein powder or 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 tablespoon of honey (optional)
Add ingredients liquids first to blender on low gradually increasing to high blending for 1 minute or until desired consistency is reached. You may have to add water.
Most of the time I don’t put the honey in when I make these smoothies because I am trying to cut back on my sugar.
